Pre-Salt Oil Reserves

Brazil currently produces almost 400,000 bopd from pre-salt reservoirs in the Santos and Campos Basins. Brazil's total oil production is currently 2.2 million bopd.

Petrobras forecasts Brazil's pre-salt oil production will reach 1.0 million bopd by 2017 and increase to 2.1 million bopd by 2020. Indeed, Petrobras has set a very ambitious goal to achieve by 2020, a production level of 4.2 million bopd of pre-salt oil production (Tako Koning P. Geol, Reservoir Magazine, Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists).

The oil industry is keenly watching to see if Brazil's success will be duplicated in West Africa. The following link is a very interesting article about the pre-salt oil reserves in Gabon, compared with the Brazil's pre-salt deposits.

Door to Hell - Natural gas deposit on fire for over 40 years

The site was identified by Soviet scientists in 1971. It was thought to be a substantial oil field site. The scientists set up a drilling rig and camp nearby, and started drilling operations to assess the quantity of gas reserve available at the site. As the Soviets were pleased with the success of finding the gas resources, they started storing the gas. The ground beneath the drilling rig and camp collapsed into a wide crater and disappeared. No lives were lost in the incident. Large quantities of methane gas were released, however, creating an environmental problem and posing a potential danger to the people of the nearby villages.

Fearing the further release of poisonous gases from the cavern, the scientists decided to burn it off. They thought that it would be safer to burn it than to extract it from underground through expensive methods.

Environmentally, setting gas on fire is the next best solution when the circumstances are such that it cannot be extracted for use. At that time, expectations were that the gas would burn out within a few weeks, but has continued to burn more than four decades after it was set on fire.

20th Western Africa Oil, Gas & Energy. 14 - 16 April 2014 Windhoek Namibia

With a 35 year proven track record in and on Africa, Global Pacific & Partnerswill host their 20th Western Africa Oil, Gas/ LNG & Energy 2014 Conference in Namibia, with the 10th Western Africa: Strategy Briefing taking place on the 14th April at same venue.
The “Western Africa” arena covers a vast oil and gas exploration zone, one of the world’s richest and most promising for ventures- from Morocco to the Cape, including island states, with an enormous offshore zone and hydrocarbon potential, alongside prospective deepwater blocks, ultra-deep opportunities only to date marginally explored, Exclusive Economic Zones, and promising pre-salt potential analogous to Brasil, plus numerous existing onshore basins (producing and immature, as well as frontier) and a huge interior domain across 27 countries – in effect, fully one half of Africa and the continental land mass of over 30, 000 sq km.
With around 30 speakers from Governments, National Oil Companies, Super-Majors and Independents on the Program, the meeting canvasses the investment strategies, exploration ventures, deal flow, transactions, and new venture opportunities, with bid rounds from Licensing Agencies, in a complex and fast-moving oil/gas-LNG industry, with an enhanced Exhibition and the engagement of the service/supply industry across the region as well as from abroad.

DFNE 2014, Vancouver, Canada from October 19 - 22, 2014.

The Vancouver rock mechanics community is pleased to host DFNE 2014, the 1st International Conference on Discrete Fracture Network Engineering. This conference will be the inaugural international meeting of engineers and geoscientists who use discrete fracture network engineering in the characterization of rock masses and solutions of engineering problems. This new and rapidly expanding area of engineering has wide applications, including underground and surface mining, underground nuclear waste disposal, petroleum geomechanics, civil engineering and natural hazards.
